More then 40yrs around 75 Deer’s illegally cage by BMC in their garden at Powai, finally freed after 3yrs continues effort & follow-up by PAWS-Mumbai

Following to an information our organisation Plant & Animals Welfare Society - Mumbai (PAWS-Mumbai) team visited to the spot and launched an written complaint with Dy. Conservator of Forests, Wildlife Division, Thane Office. And following to the complaint Animal Welfare Board of India was also send a letter to forest department in this regards

1. Following to our complaint Forest officers have seized 12o kg of Deer's horns, 1 Star Turtle & 75 Live Deer's from BMC's Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Garden (Powai Garden) and offence was booked under Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 & Central Zoo Act 1992, there FIR Nos. are 1/06-07 Dated : 01.04.06, No.: 2/06-07 Dated : 22.05.06, No.: 3/06-07 Dated 22.05.06 against 4 topmost officers of BMC
1. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner,
2. Hydraulic Engineer Powai,
3. Assistant Engineer Out Side City,
4. Assistant Garden Superintendent Powai.
2. As per RTI reply, the BMC does not have any permission from any of the authority, no veterinary doctor, no register of health or vaccination, & no hospital to look after this animals is maintain

3.The deer enclosure was found broken in many places, which not only cause the animals major injuries but also make it easy for visitors to feed aniamls
4. As per the RTI reply the BMC spend Rupees Thirteen Lakh Fifty Thousand for Man Power and Rupees Two Lakh for Food ever year.
But do you think is to true they are using for that purpose ?
or going in the pockets of ....

5. Office of the Asst. Supdt. of Garden Mr. Prakash Baburao Khonde. As per the RTI reply animals & birds are been taken care by the staff headed by him

6. Since 1996, we at PAWS-Mumbai follow-up the issue with all the concern
department, January 2009 finally all the deer’s have been shifted to the Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary at Vasai, offenders were fined by Forest officers & cost of the transportation was bared by BMC authority

7. The animals were transported in batches in special trucks as per the IUCN guidelines
8. Dr. Vinaya Jangale Veterinary Doctor of Sanjay Gandhi National Park said "As deers are delicate animal, so we kept them in cages constructed in Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary over a month before releasing in to wild and the percentage of causality is very less then we thought"
